Innovation in Print: The Technology and Collaboration Behind a Landmark Mural

Find out how uniting cutting-edge UVgel print technology and strong partnerships create lasting impact through large-scale art

In Eindhoven’s Strijp-S district, a 35 x 35-meter mural, Kids Climbing Towards Their Future, has changed the cityscape. Strijp-S, once an industrial hub for Philips, has transformed into Eindhoven’s creative heart, blending historic architecture with vibrant street art, innovative design, and a dynamic urban culture.

The mural, created by artist Geert Retera, adorns the rear of the ‘Donna’ building and is visible from incoming trains. Beyond its visual impact, the mural symbolises hope and ambition. Depicting children from diverse backgrounds, it represents social mobility and a brighter future. Accompanied by Fresku’s poem Eind Hoger, the piece blends imagery and words into a powerful statement.

This large-scale artwork was made possible through a collaboration between Braintown (real estate investors), The Sticker Company (print service provider), and Canon’s unique UVgel printing technology, demonstrating the power of digital print in décor and art.

From sketch to success: a printing feat

Unlike traditional murals, this piece was produced using high-quality self-adhesive vinyl. Retera’s hand-drawn concept was scanned, digitally refined, and printed in 140 precisely cut strips, some up to 12 meters high. The entire mural was printed on a Colorado printer using IJM744 Production Vinyl, Polymeric, Satin, Permanent 90 µm media from Canon Imaging Supplies. UVgel technology ensured exceptional colour consistency and durability, while immediate lamination enhanced UV resistance and adhesion. Over six weeks, the machine worked full-time to bring the design to life.

Precision installation and expanding business potential

Installing the mural required expert craftsmanship and strategic planning. The Sticker Company coded each section for precise sequencing, and experienced signmakers worked at great heights for over five weeks. With favourable weather conditions, the project progressed smoothly.

This project showcases the vast possibilities of large-format printing. It demonstrates how Canon technology enables artists to push creative boundaries and helps companies grow their business by expanding their application range.

From interior films to other unique applications, the flexibility of the UVgel technology has added an exciting new dimension to print in interiors. This newfound versatility allows artists and businesses alike to explore a broader range of possibilities and push the limits of what’s achievable with print.

Guidance for optimal results

Canon’s expertise in imaging supplies and large-format printing was crucial to the project’s success. By providing guidance on media selection and production, Canon ensured optimal results, reinforcing its commitment to innovation in print and design.

With Braintown's vision, Geert’s creativity, Sticker Company’s craftsmanship, and Canon's technology, this project became a reality.
