The EOS R5 offers class leading autofocus along with high resolution and high frame rate video recording options using the maximum width of the full frame sensor at high bit rates. Inevitably this combination of features will generate some significant heat which in turn will limit recording time. With Firmware V1.60 and later the “Auto power off temperature” function set to [High] enables longer recording times, but when using this setting the exterior of the camera will become very hot.
The approximate shooting times for the available resolutions and frame rates in 23°C / 73°F environments from a cold start are detailed below.
8K 30P
- Full Sensor Width RAW external recorder: Unlimited
Auto power off temperature - Standard
- Full Sensor Width: 20 minutes

- Full Sensor Width High Quality (8.2K oversampled): 30 minutes
- APS-C crop (5.1K oversampled): not limited by heat *2
*
1 Recording stops at 7 minutes and 30 seconds for high frame rate video. Indicates the time when recording can be resumed immediately.
*
2 Recording is limited to 29 minutes 59 seconds. Indicates the time when recording can be resumed immediately.
Cautions
* The above figures are based on Canon testing conditions when using CFexpress cards and SD memory cards conforming to Canon testing standards.
* When the ambient temperature is higher than +23°C/73°F, the available recording time will be shorter.
* When using the viewfinder (EVF), the maximum available recording time will be shorter than when using the camera’s screen
* Compared to using the battery, the maximum available recording time will be shorter when the camera is powered by USB.
* Depending on the movie recording quality and capacity of memory card used, the card may become full before available continuous recording time.
* When using [Auto pwr off temp.] to [High] and recording movies, the card may become very hot. Please, be careful when removing memory card.
If the camera reaches the temperature limit it is recommended to turn the camera off in order to allow the heat dissipate.
Approximate recovery times for a 23°C / 73°F environment are indicated below but are affected by various factors such as ambient temperature, continued camera operation and the selected shooting resolution. The time until full record time is available will vary with ambient temperature.
8K 30P
- 10 minute cooldown gives approx. 3 minutes of recording time
- 20 minute cooldown gives approx. 8 minutes of recording time
4K 60P
- 10 minute cooldown gives approx. 10 minutes of recording time
For hybrid shooters who prioritise filmmaking, we developed the EOS R5 C. While using the same form factor as the EOS R5, the EOS R5 C adds even more codecs and an extended shooting time when working with 8K video. Find out which camera suits you best with our comparison guide.
